Dealing with diabetes
Learning how to deal with diabetes is as important a taking the treatment of diabetes because it is a lifelong disease that you need to know how to live with it. Till now, there is no cure for this disease and all the treatment we have is just for controlling it and unfortunately even these medicines are not enough to control the disease alone. So, if you suffer from diabetes you need to know how to deal with it from day to day.
The first thing you need to do is to learn as much as you can about your disease. You need to know first which type you are suffering from. Most likely you are suffering from type two because it is more prevalent and it affects those who are: over thirty five years old, African American or Hispanic or Asian, smoke a lot, have high cholesterol or lately delivered a baby.
After that you need to know how to take care of your disease. You need to visit a specialized doctor to find out the proper treatment for your case, have your blood tested every three months to see how you progress in controlling your diabetes, have your teeth checked twice a year, have your eyes checked twice a year because uncontrolled diabetes can affect your nerve endings, eyes and teeth so you need to make sure that everything is under control.
The next step is to know what to eat, how to eat and what types of food can benefit or harm your overall status. Your doctor will guide you through all of these items and will answer any questions that come to your mind.
After that you need to check with your doctor whether your blood sugar is under control or not. If not, you may ask your doctor to change the treatment plan that you are on. In diabetes, the individual variance to drugs is something common so, in most cases the doctor needs to try different medications before settling down with the suitable one.
The most important step is to keep an eye on the risk factors that may contribute in elevating your blood glucose level. You need to monitor your blood pressure, your cholesterol level and your heart condition. These items are the mirror of your disease, if you fall within the normal readings for all of them then your diabetes is under control but if you feel that diabetes had affected one or more of these readings then you may want to speak about it with your doctor.
